"Sandy" 1954 18 ft. Lyman Islander
“I gotta have one of those!” That was the sentiment of the boat's original owner Sandy McCallum at the 1954 Toronto Boat Show. A trip the next week to Lyman's factory in Sandusky, Ohio resulted in the purchase of this beautiful vessel - an 18 foot lapstrake power boat – painted hull, varnished foredeck and windshield, and gunwales, and transom and interior. Engine box amidships, plenty of walk-around room, bench seats fore and aft, and a canvas top from the windshield to midpoint. 60 HP Gray Marine engine, side steering with two ship-like spoked wheels, one forward and one amidships. Now fifty years later this clinker-built (lapstrake) gem has become the property of George Crossman and Linda Hendren to use at their cottage on Chemong Lake. Purchased in the fall of 2005, George and Linda decided that this boat should have a name, thusly christening her "Sandy."
Taken to the 2007 ACBS Show in Gravenhurst by brother and sister-in-law, John and Cindy Hendren, "Sandy" took home the "Best in Show - American built Utility" award.
This boat was found recently at a private residence in Peterborough, Ontario. Although not used for some time, she had been well taken care of by previous owners. Plans were made to fully restore this little beauty. She had been restored about 20 years ago, with 'updated' upholstery, windshield, steering wheel, etc. The current restoration, done by John Hendren, put this Shepherd back to a more traditional look. Currently powered by a 65 Merc outboard.
